The planned outcomes of the proposed intervention -Public interest media under financial pressure are sustained: Over 75% of public interest outlets at risk of extinction will continue providing quality content. -Public interest media improve economic resilience: Over 25% will demonstrate improved financial stability using the Funds Economic Resilience Index (ERI). -Public interest media better serve society: Over 75% of supported outlets will produce content that addresses SDG topics and/or mitigates mis/disinformation and over 75% of supported media outlets will maintain or improve their audience reach and/or engagement, including with underserved groups. -Innovations to unlock new funding sources for public interest media: Two financing solutions will be advanced to address the structural resourcing challenges faced by public interest media and improve long-term sustainable funding of independent journalism. This could include innovations such as journalism funds and AI licensing frameworks. - De-risking support from other investors and mobilizing additional funding for the sector: IFPIM aims to make it safer for philanthropic, governmental, and private sector investors (including development banks) to support independent media through its pooled fund structure supported by a multilateral coalition and its independent governance structure enabling both arms-length funding by donors and safeguarding of grantees editorial independence. The fund estimates that for every dollar contributed by Sida for this intervention, it can expect at least one additional dollar from other sources, thus leveraging their investment. In addition, innovative financing solutions mentioned above will also help unlock additional funding to the sector with a major leverage effect on initial seed investment.
