Objectives The project seeks to fullfil four key objectives: 1. Support national longitudinal mixed-methods studies of government-run cash-based programmes to understand design and implementation and examine their impacts, including on: a) Gender equality and women's empowerment b) Long-term impacts including adolescent transitions to adulthood c) Urban areas d) People with disability e) Resilience to shocks through cash transfers and shock-responsive cash-based programming. 2. Generate evidence on public finance for sustainable social protection including political economy analysis of the decisions to invest in social protection. 3. Undertake country-level and cross-country analysis to respond to evidence gaps on social transfer programmes and social protection systems in the region. 4. Facilitate mechanisms for learning and exchange among regional policymakers, implementers, researchers and civil society through workshops, web resources, public data availability and open-access publications. The four key objectives are highly relevant for the five countries where research activities will be implemented and for SSA in general. The planned activities are developed in close cooperation with stakeholders in the national contexts. Proposed outputs will include primary data collection, reports, policy and research briefs and blog posts. In addition, there will be dissemination via social media, peer-reviewed journals, in-country dissemination workshops and presentations to practitioners and at international conferences
