Bangladesh’s justice and law enforcement systems face challenges rooted in politicization, corruption, and limited institutional capacity. The police and the judiciary are working on developing a reform agenda. The JRC and PRC have been established with short mandates to develop recommendations regarding these systemic issues and to propose actionable reforms. However, the limited time-frame that they have been given and lack of continuity mechanisms pose risks to the sustainability of their recommendations. The proposed contribution aims to empower the Justice sector reform- and Police reform Commissions to deliver effective and sustainable reform recommendations within their mandates while building mechanisms to ensure continuity beyond submission to the Interim Government.

Result
Bangladeshs recent political transitions and social unrest have exposed significant challenges in the justice and police sectors, highlighting an urgent need for reform. A successful political transition depends on the demonstrated will to tackle reform challenges and work towards resolution of deeply rooted institutional problems to build back public trust. In the judiciary Beslut om insats Decision on Contribution Enhet/Amb.beslut Unit/Emb. Decision Contribution ID: 17299 10 (13) persistent issues such as case backlogs and procedural delays, limited access for marginalized communities, and judicial independence have eroded public trust in the justice system. Similarly, the police face allegations of use of excessive force, political interference, and limited accountability, compounded by outdated colonial era practices - The proposed contribution aims to empower the JRC and PRC to deliver effective and sustainable reform recommendations within their mandates while building mechanisms to ensure continuity beyond submission to the Interim Government. The project period is from 1st December 2024 to 30th June 2025 (7 months total).
