Recurring Disasters: Swedish Humanitarian Assistance to Ethiopia

Sweden is one of the largest bilateral humanitarian donors in the world,
and a committed provider of humanitarian assistance to a range of
crisis-affected countries. The objective of this paper is to present an
overview of Swedish humanitarian assistance to Ethiopia since the
mid-1970s until 2020. The report has a retrospective perspective. Prime
focus is on the scale and character of the Swedish emergency response.
As a backdrop to the presentation of Swedish assistance, the paper also
includes a short introduction to humanitarian assistance in general as well
as a brief description of the Ethiopian context with an emphasis on the
emergencies and disasters which have motivated humanitarian support.
The Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) is responsible for
providing humanitarian assistance at country and regional level, as a
consequence, focus in this paper is on assistance channelled by Sida.....
