Support provided under the project was instrumental in facilitating the consultations, design and signing of the Zimbabwe United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (ZUNSDCF) 2022-2026. The ZUNSDCF succeeded the Zimbabwe UN Development Framework (ZUNDAF) 2016-2021. With the catalytic support provided under the project, technical support was provided resulting in the mainstreaming of gender, human rights, and disability rights within the ZUNSDCF. The 2022 UN Joint Workplan for UNSDCF further incorporated gender and disability priorities as both specific and mainstreamed interventions. With the support from the Gender and Disability Coordination Advisor, the UN jointly coordinated the UN Joint Programmes, Spotlight Initiative, and the Safe Markets Programme. The Spotlight Initiative strengthened Government efforts on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and related legal and policy reforms, womens movement building as well as tools, guidelines, and frameworks to address SGBV in Zimbabwe. Additionally, support was provided towards strengthening Governments coordination capacities in this area and in the development of disability laws, policies, and strategies for effective implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at national and local levels. During the period under review, the support provided under the projected facilitated the strengthening of communications and advocacy capacities of institutions to deliver on their mandate and access to information by citizens on elections, democracy, justice, and human rights. The UN Communications Group (UNCG) with consistent leadership and support of the RCO Communications Specialist successfully rolled out a series of stakeholders engagements on 17 SDGs with particular focus on youth and women engagement, climate action, human rights, and democracy - creating a sense of urgency on the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The overall objective of the project is support to reinvigorate the RC to accelerate SDG implementation in Zimbabwe, through seven broad pillars: 1) joint UN support to the Government to prepare and implement the new national development plan; 2) consolidation of the investments towards gender equality; 3) joint UN prevention strategy for sustaining peace and promoting human rights; 4) strategic communication and advocacy for UN values and principles; 5) joint UN support to increase transparency and accountability to fight corruption; 6) strengthening humanitarian-development nexus, including through coordinated Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Action efforts; and 7) strengthening sectoral and multi-sectoral coordination across key strategic priority areas to maximize results.
