The reported results based on the strategic objectives are as follows; STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 1: THE INCOME, FOOD AND ENERGY SECURITY FOR MEN, WOMEN AND YOUTH FARMERS HAS IMPROVED. On the overall, farmers income increased by 22% out of the planned target of 25%.The highest increase in income was reported in dairy and horticulture value chains, while cotton and legumes reported the lowest increase partly due to global competition, climate change, pest and diseases that affected the two value chains. An internal survey undertaken by SNV showed that 4,560 farmers (out of the target 7910 farmers) reported increased food security representing 61% out of the planned target of 70%. STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 2 - AGRIBUSINESSES, SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES (SMES) AND BIOGAS CONSTRUCTION ENTERPRISES (BCES) : The adoption of climate smart practices (e.g improved forage feeding) by project farmers led to increased milk productivity. For instance, the dairy farmers recorded an increased milk production to an average of 22 litres per day, up from 12 litres at the baseline. Access to finance remains a challenge for the adoption of climate smart agriculture (CSA) and renewable energy (RE) in Zambia due to high interest rates. However, self-financing mechanisms such as Village Savings and Lending Associations (VSLAs) and farmer group lending was promoted. During the reporting period, 4100 youths (1640 males, 2460 females) mobilized and lent about Kwacha 1,000,000 to each other. The project has so far enabled about 3,644 smallholder farmers to access financing services for climate smart inputs and equipment. Further about 1,534 dairy farmers were able to access loans from cooperatives. Two cooperatives stand out in the provision of credit services to its members. These cooperatives are Mungaila and Chalala. The respective cooperatives received trainings in governance and financial management and are now actively offering credit services to their members to access input (on credits). STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 3; ENABLING ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING INSTITUTIONS AND YOUTH From the project target of 1,500 biogas, 725 households were able to install new bio-digesters during the reporting period. This result contributed towards increased usage of bio slurry for agricultural purposes, reduction of indoor air pollution and reduction of labour burden to fetch for wood fuel amongst the project households. SNV collaborated with private sector companies to implement the OYE component. These companies include Treetop, Seba Foods, and Good Nature. The other institutions that SNV collaborated with are the Ministry of youth and child development, Zambia Agricultural Research Institute (ZARI), TEVETA and the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA). The membership based organisations that the project is working with are the Katete District Women Development Association, Lundazi District Women Development Association, and Eastern Province Cashew Nut Growers Association. SNV partnered with several Local Service Providers (LSP) to implement the OYE component. The LSP are engaged by the project to provided trainings and mentorship services to the youths that are participating in the project.
The overall goal of the intervention is “Increased social, economic and environmental resilience and equity in agricultural and energy systems”, with the following project strategic outcomes (SOs) organized according to the three main stakeholder groups: SO 1 (men, women and youth farmers): The income, food and energy security for men, women and youth farmers has improved. SO 2 (agribusinesses, SMEs and BCEs): Increased business/value chain performance through climate smart investments in agriculture, water and renewable energy. SO 3 (enabling environment, including institutions and youth): The performance of the enabling environment for identifying, developing and scaling of markets for climate smart agriculture, water and renewable energy practices (including opportunities for youth employment) has improved.
