Conciliation Resources (CR) has reported on achievements related to their long term support for adaptive and alternative forms of peacebuilding in conflict contexts Results from 2022 have been presented from across the regions in which CR operates; East and Central Africa, West Africa, Horn of Africa, South Caucasus, South and South-East Asia, The Pacific. Parts of CRs programming work spans across multiple countries. Through policy influencing, CR has also contributed with expertise at the international level. Core funding from Sida has been vital for enabling growth and continuity of CR's peacebuilding work with attention to long term impact. A selection of achievements towards CR's strategic goals is presented below. GOAL 1. ADAPTIVE AND ALTERNATIVE PATHS TO PEACE In 2022 CR continued to support those in conflict to find common ground and tackle legacies of violence, including through adaptive and alternative forms of dialogue and mediation. For example, in the Central African Republic (CAR), CR contributed to social cohesion between young people from different ethno-religious backgrounds, through addressing key factors for inter-communal violence and armed group membership since 2013. CR has also facilitated the process leading to two local peace agreements in CAR, signed by local authorities, religious leaders, CSOs, and community members. Through the partnership with the Women's Peace and Humanitarian Funds Rapid Response Window, CR have continued to address urgent funding gaps with targeted support for women-led organisations in Liberia. Further more, in Afghanistan, CR has helped to bring together Afghans with experience of peace and political processes and dialogue. Results of such initiatives includes the suspension of land seizures. As an example of increased efforts to work with peacebuilding related to the effects of climate change, CR has launched a platform in South Asia which aims to build confidence between divided communities in Punjab, through addressing the shared challenges of the climate crisis. The platform has further contributed to including environmental collaboration on the agenda of the high level dialogue between India-Pakistan. GOAL 2. CONNECTING PEOPLE AND PEACE EFFORTS CR has during 2022 continued to accompany local peacebuilding networks, including in Somali Regional State of Ethiopia, where CR helped connect over 300 victims and survivors of conflict with the regional Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In CAR, Burikina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, CR has been able to bridge local actors with national peace and reconciliation processes, for example by promoting dialogue and trust between security agencies and local communities. GOAL 3. INCLUSION, GENDER AND INFLUENCE Across all geographies where CR works, there is a strong focus on inclusion of marginalized groups engage in peacebuilding processes. As an example, in Nigeria, CR with partners have ensured women and young people are represented in peace networks and coalitions. In the Philippines, CR supported indigenous communities to share their experiences on issues such as climate change and conflict, with regional leaders. The impacts of climate change have also been at the forefront of CRs work in the Pacific, where partners have facilitated space for people affected by climate change relocation, to voice their concerns to the government as a strategy for dialogue and conflict prevention. In the Ethiopia's Somali Regional State, CR and their local partners has helped transform the way civil society engages with the government, with the regional parliament adopting a new law to protect civic space in the region. GOAL 4. PEOPLE CENTERED POLICY Throughout 2022, CR has advocated for better policies, regulations and funding which enable long-term, adaptive and creative approaches to peace. Research and analysis provided knowledge to understand and share what works in peacebuilding. As an example, as part of a global research programme (XEPT), CR contributed to analysis of the impact of climate change on conflict in the border regions in central and West Africa to inform peacebuilding responses. Context-specific expertise has been used to advise on national policy in the places in which CR work. For example, in Fiji, CR have been engaged in conflict analysis with the government Ministry working on climate change relocation.
In order to improve peace processes and support peace initiatives, CRs Strategic Plan 2020 2025 aims at improving the effectiveness of peacebuilding and peace processes. CR's vision is to transform the way the world resolves violent conflict so that people work together to build peaceful and inclusive societies. The Strategic Plan sets out four goals: 1. Adaptive and alternative paths to peace: peacebuilding overcomes barriers to creating peaceful societies, 2. Connecting people and peace efforts: more coherent initiatives help prevent and reduce violent conflict, 3. Inclusion, gender and influence: excluded groups influence approaches to building peace, 4. People centered policy: international peacebuilding support puts people first.
