During Year 2 a strong focus was on developing standardised training materials. Trainings took place in two states, Red Sea and Northern State focusing on DRR and CCA, targeting 41 participants (F13, M28) who are members of the Community Disaster Response Teams and SRCS volunteers. A week long workshop was held in Nairobi with the core project team, together with SRC technical colleagues, to discuss and decide on the content and methodology of trainings (activity 1.2.1). One PGI/CEA training took place for governance, staff and volunteers in Northern State in Q2, with a total of 15 participants (9F, 6M). The results from the pre and post test showed that the PGI knowledge of the participants had increased from 20% to 95% after the training. As part of disaster responses, the following results have been achieved: Terrace rehabilitation, Artigasha Island, Northern State: The terrace has been rehabilitated to decrease the loss of lives, animals, houses and agricultural lands from river flooding and riverbank erosion, and to increase the crop productivity . The terrace measures 2.5km long, 2 metres high and 1.5m wide. A committee from community volunteers, CDRT members, and local authorities has been formulated to look after the terrace. Riverbank stabilization, Artigasha Island, Northern State: Volunteers and community members (F30, M20) participated in planting 350 seedlings (Acacia nilotica, Salix babylonica, and Mimosa pudica). A committee has been formulated to manage this trees lines and ensure its sustainability. The shelterbelt in Salib Village: The shelterbelt will assist in protecting agricultural lands and houses from sand creep. 55 people (F30, M20, Child 5) participated from community members and SRCS volunteers in planting 400 seedlings for the shelterbelt, which is 746 metres long. Home gardens were established in Salib village to support the income and livelihood of 15 women, who were selected based on a specific criterion in consultation with the communities. A total of 15 women were selected and trained and received seedlings, seeds, and tools. Renovation of terraces for water harvesting in Haya, Red Sea State: the project, together with inkind support from the agricultural office in Haya locality rehabilitated total of 8 earth terraces for agriculture. The earth terraces are a costeffective method to harvest water for agriculture, constructed by accumulating earth in curve shape (lengths 200m 500m). Renovation of terraces for water harvesting in Durdeb, Red Sea State: water harvesting had been selected by Durdeb community as a priority during the EVCA. Its typically the same as in Haya with the eight terraces renovated for water harvesting purposes and slow down the flash flood speed decreasing its force and reduce the risk to the community downstream. The rehabilitation of the Hafir in Delay, Red Sea State: During the EVCA the community selected the rehabilitation of the Hafir (reservoir) as one of their priorities. The Hafir is the main source of water for farming, watering animals, and domestic use with a capacity is up to 126000 m3. The rehabilitation of the Hafir included the following: fencing, provision of solar energy, and a drainage channel construction Six Early Warning System Committees (EWS) have been formulated in: Al Dabba and Al Burgaig localities in Northern State Haya and Durdeb localities in Red Sea State Barber and Abu Hamad localities in River Nile State (activity 3.3.1). The purpose of EWS committee is to enable the community to prepare for any upcoming predicted disaster and empower them to take appropriate timely actions. They will be equipped to work as a team as well as with other stakeholders in order to disseminate lifesaving information at the right time.
