This first report covers only six months of project implementation, 1 June to 31 December 2022. This is because annual reporting is to follow UNDP reporting calendar, which is based on calendar year. Therefore, as the project officially started during the middle of 2022, the report covers mainly preparatory activities. The following are activities and output level achievements reported by UNDP during the period: 1.Project launch and stakeholder consultations: The project was formally launched in November 2022. 50 representatives from relevant government agencies, county officials, and civil society organizations attended the launching event. 2.Also, community level engagements and consultative meetings were held across the seven project counties, focusing on forest fringe communities. These community level engagements ensured that the project stakeholders and project communities are consulted on the project details as well as get their inputs. 3.Furthermore, a full project team was set up with 5 project implementing staff, including a joint project manager who was internationally recruited.
The project seeks to strengthen management of community forests and protected areas in Liberia through improved capacity of community forest management bodies, capacity building of forest regulatory institutions, empowerment of forest and farm producer organizations, and promotion of sustainable livelihood incentives for forest fringe communities. The following are the results that are envisaged at the end of the project: 1. Strengthened institutional and community capacity, and regulatory framework for community forest management 2. Status of key species and their habitat improved due to participatory forest management and biodiversity conservation 3. Livelihood options for communities are made climate-resilient through diversification, enterprise development 4. Knowledge management system built /strengthened to support gender-balanced community forest management and co-management of protected areas.
