General question: Results related to the intended outcome 2016Question: Summarise results related to the intended outcome (this information will be sent to Open Aid)Answer: During 2016, Swedish funds were only used to research actitivities in the Brachiaria program, no funds were used for goats research or for upgrading and strengthening of biotech laboratories (at BecA or at partners). Research in the Brachiaria programme focused on endophytes, cultivars adapted to drought and low fertility acid soils, reaching farmers in Kenya and Uganda interested in participating in the programme and on seed multiplication/propagation. The role of so called endophytes, "root nodules" improving growth in the Brachiaria forage grass, was studied, in addition models to detect and characterize endophytes were developed. At BecA 500 fungi and 110 bacterial isolates/strains were isolated, molecular "identification" is now available for 356 fungi and 101 bacteria. Also, root dipping for bacterial inoculation in seedlings were studied. Adaptation to drought and low fertility acid soils were studied, Brachiaria compared to the widely used Napier grass, water use as well as nitrogen utilization. The number of farmers interested in and cultivating the Brachiaria grass in Kenya and Rwanda continues to increase, in Kenya now over 7 000 farmers and the demand for Brachiaria seeds is increasing in all regions of Kenya. In Rwanda, Brachiaria have been established by 173 farmers in three districts. Milk and meat production following use of Brachiaria as livestock feed has increased (above targets), in Rwanda up to 100% increase in milk production has been reported. Brochures with recommendations on establishment and management of Brachiaria grass has been published and distributed to farmers, and a 14 pages manual on land preparation, planting, weeding and harvesting has been approved for distribution to agricultural extension officers. A Brachiaria seed production manual has been developed, however, seed production/multiplication is difficult in tropical climate zones and propagation of Brachiaria is mostly done by root splits (vegetative propagation). In May 2016, collaborating institutions in the Brachiaria programme met to discuss research priorities for the next phase of the Sida/BecA programme. In addition to the research activities, an Environmental and Social Impact Asssessment of the Brachiaria programme was undertaken in July 2016. The key recommendations include upscaling of the seed supply and training of farmers on the Brachiaria grasses best management practices, including the provision of user manuals and facilitation of exchange visits to learn from each other. And during the second half of 2016, an external evaluation of the Sida support (2012-2017) resulted in 11 recommendations. On Brachiaria, it was recommended to continue, however, the role of BecA should be more on research and less on extension and practical applications (to be taken care of by partners). Also, somewhat more focus in activities. Continued funding for the highly successful fellowship programme ABCF was recommended, including Alumni programmes to enable researchers to keep connected with their colleagues in the region. Furthermore, it was recommended that BecA should put greater effort in its communication strategy of clearly articulating its impacts. Finally, there was a discussion on trying to broaden the donor base, annual donor meetings was proposed (a donor´s meeting will be held in March 2017) with new potential donors to be invited. Finally, the very late start of the BIO-INNOVATE programme - in November 2016, made it impossible to seek synergies, however, as BIO-INNOVATE and the new Sida/BecA partnership (with a new director as from mid-2017) very much will be up and running late 2017, joint BIO-INNOVATE and BecA meetings will be scheduled for 2018.
