Examples of cumulative achievements today (quotes from WSTF Quarterly Report Jan - March 2021); "Component 1: (a) Enactment of County Water laws by Kwale and Tharaka Nithi County Governments; (b) The development of County water strategies for Kwale, Migori and Narok Counties; (c) Development of County Water Masterplans for Tharaka Nithi, Nandi and Laikipia Counties; (d) County engagement strategy; and (e) Mapping of water infrastructure within the six counties are important milestones realized under the first programme outcome. The programme aims at completing enactment of the third water law for Laikipia County before the programme completion. Component 2: A total of 24 WRUAs have been funded. Investment in water resources management through Water Resources Users Associations (WRUAs) has improved water storage through rain water harvesting in institutions and construction of sand dams and water pans. In order to manage the use of water resources, control structures like common intakes were constructed with the aim of sharing the resource equitably amongst all competing uses. Through the WRUAs, water quality was enhanced through protection of water sources e.g. spring protection and catchment conservation. This act will ensure that the quality of water from the protected sources remains potable and in some instances, the cost of treatment of water will remain low and affordable. Component 3: Since the J6 Programme inception in FY 2015/2016, a total of 42 water projects have been implemented under the programme. This is in line with the programme name of ‘Equitable Access to Quality Water, Basic Sanitation and Enhanced Water Resources Management’. In improving access to quality water, the programme targets to reach 199,280 people of which 124,898 have been reached across the target six counties. Component 4: The programme, on improving basic sanitation focused on both institutional and public places as well as Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) which is being implemented in five counties of Kwale, Laikipia, Nandi, Migori and Tharaka Nithi. Under institutional sanitation, 43 sanitation projects have been constructed and in addition three public sanitation facilities have been built reaching out to total 12,310 beneficiaries against a target of 16,040. The Community Led Total Sanitation is considered to be WSTF’s new frontier in supporting Ministry of Health to achieving ODF targets in the country. It has seen 300 villages delivered as Open Defecation Free out of the programme target of 376. The total population in the 300 villages declared ODF is 105,166 Component 5: The programme has continued to support County Resident Monitors (CRMs) in the six counties who in turn supports the implementation of projects in their respective counties. Capacitybuilding of WSTF staff in areas of project management, environmental management and financial management has been conducted over a period of time."
