The census provided a better understanding of the country's demographic situation and dynamics. This made it possible to better ensure the integration of demographic variables into the economic and development planning process. Thanks to the population census that took place from November to December 2019, the size of Burkina Faso's population, its characteristics (distribution by sex and age, spatial distribution, fertility, mortality, marital status, economic activities, migratory status, etc.) and its dynamics are known. The population of the country is 20 505 155 personnes including 10 604 308 women. The census also provided a new, accurate picture of the structural characteristics of Burkinabe agriculture to provide benchmarks for measuring the dynamics of the rural world. An inventory of modern farms, processing units and marketing infrastructures, professional agricultural organizations, irrigated cropping sites and fishing and aquaculture sites was carried out. Census data have been used as a sampling frame for several surveys, such as the 2021 demographic and health survey, a survey of national media audience in Burkina Faso, etc. They have also enabled us to make demographic projections and monographs of Burkina Faso's regions and communes. Thanks to these data, planning documents such as the Action Plan for Stabilization and Development (PA SD) and various sectoral policies have been drawn up. Preliminary and final results are the following: - There is knowledge of the overall size of the population of Burkina Faso, its structure by sex and age and its spatial distribution according to the different administrative units and the place of residence, as well as its evolution. - Regarding population dynamics, indicators of fertility, mortality and migration levels and trends are known. Thematic reports, regional case studies and the sociodemographic atlas are available. This made it possible to determine the levels and trends of fertility, mortality and migration, as well as natural and overall population increase. - Regarding the demographic, socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of the population, the results on the composition of the population according to languages, nationality, economic activity, schooling and literacy are available. - Thematic reports on economic activity, literacy, schooling, children, women, older persons and persons living with disabilities have been produced. Regional monographs and demographic atlases are also available. There is thus a better knowledge of the demographic, socioeconomic and cultural characteristics of the population and its subcomponents through the updating of the country's sociodemographic database. - The list of enumeration areas as well as population and household sizes are available through an update of the national sampling frame. This will allow for future investigations. - The statistical tables on households and dwellings that have been developed provide a better understanding of the characteristics of households and their living and living conditions. Analytical reports on households, housing and its environment and on the level of wellbeing of the population are available. - The indicators of population dynamics that are known providing a good understanding of future population trends. In this sense, the results of the thematic reports are available, as well as the report on population projections. - The census provided an opportunity to strengthen national capacities in planning, collecting, processing, analysing data and disseminating results. Executive training in Geographic Information System (GIS), surveying and processing has been carried out. There is an appropriation of new technologies in the implementation of data collection operations.

The project's specific objectives, output and activities have been defined. Eight specific objectives are: 1°) to know the overall size of the population, its structure by sex and age and its spatial distribution according to the different administrative units and residence area and its evolution2°) to determine the levels and trends of fertility, mortality and migration as well as the increase in global population and natural3°) to contribute to a better understanding of the demographic, socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the population and its components4°) to update the national survey database for the achievement of the potential surveys5°) to update agricultural survey database 6°) to contribute to a better understanding of households characteristics of and their living and housing conditions7°) to contribute to the better knowledge of population development8°) to strengthen national capacity in planning, data collection, processing, analysis and dissemination. In order to reach these some activities have been idenfied: census maps, population enumeration, data capture, processing, analysis, preparation of reports and dissemination. A plan that summarizes the major phases of the Census has been developed.
