According to the Census' final reports; 4,7 million people were counted, as well as 1,2 million housing units, 627,000 buildings, and 158,000 public and business establishments. This census provided much needed up to date information on the Palestinian population to decision-makers, including information on poverty, disability, unemployment, health insurance coverage, the social and economic reality of women, etc. PCBS coordinated a number of workshops with relevant ministries, governmental agencies, and local authorities to discuss and analyze the results of the census, in order to inform future policies. PCBS also published reports presenting the final results on a national level, as well as detailed reports per governorate. For the data collection, around 11,000 new graduates were recruited and trained, providing much needed (although temporary) work opportunities.
For Sweden to contribute to the Population, Housing and Establishment Census (PHC), conducted in Palestine in 2017 by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). Sweden was one of many donors who contributed to the census. Sweden also facilitated the contribution of the Netherlands, using the Nordic Plus mechanism for co-financing (delegated cooperation). PCBS is the government agency responsible for performing the census, which is also partly funded by the Palestinian Authority (PA). The cencus will provide statistical data that is crucial for Palestinian decision makers in planning and monitoring progress, on both local and national level, towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and towards international treaties that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has acceded to such as The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women - CEDAW, among others. The data will also provide NGOs, United Nations organizations and international development agencies operating in Palestine, as well as academic and research institutions, local interest groups informatio and insights on the situaiton of the Palestinian population.
