Resultat
PEN has between 2015 and 2019: - Improved the lives of more than 280 writers at risk through solidarity campaigning and protection work. - Supported more than 140 writers with emergency grants. - Conducted 427 expert assessments to ICORN. - PEN Centers have contributed to progress on repealing criminal defamation in four countries. - Three amicus briefs, two before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) on the cases of Tulio Alberto Alvarez v Venezuela and Julio ernesto Alvarado v Honduras, one before the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice in the case of the Federation of African Journalists v The Gambia. Positive judgements in all three cases including successfully securing precautionary measures for Alvarado in a landmark ruling. - 26 third party interventions before the Europen Court of Human Rights on issues including Turkey, Hungary and the case on Khadija Ismayilova (Azerbaijan). Positive judgements in two cases where PEN headed interventions led to the release of Turkish writers Mehmet Altan and Sahin Alpay. - Almost 50 000 writers, journalists, academics, teachers, parents, community members, young people and more have benefitted from the Civil Society Programme (CSP). - Supported 60 writers through their asylum process. - 28 PEN Centers demonstrated improved engagement with duty bearers leading to increased and continued advocacy.
The overall mission of PEN International is to promote freedom of expression and literature, celebrate languages and linguistic diversity and cultivate respect and tolerance through cross-cultural dialogue, literature and translation. The strategic plan for 2015-2019 has three overall goals: 1) Increase the impact and reach of PEN's advocacy and other programming to promote freedom of expression, literatures and linguistic diversity and mutual respect and tolerance across borders2) Cultivate strong, diverse, and sustainable PEN centres that are influential civil society actors advancing PEN's mission at the local, national, regional and international levels3) Strengthen the capacity of PEN International to facilitate, support, and promote PEN's work globally through PEN's centennial year.
